for children, a city, a country at war with itself. what kind of things are these little girls seeing beyond the school gates? >> translator: we as educators don't support one side or the other. our concern is for the child to learn. so we keep the school open and help with their fears. we can't do as much as before, but the key thing is to try to deal with their anxiety. >> reporter: up, down, left, right, two, three, four. out in the playground it's a p-e lesson. exercises including running to the wall, touching it and running back. here, the running's for fun, but beyond the school walls, a shell or mortar can land anywhere any time, running could be a matter of life and death. for obvious reasons the killing of small children and teachers in and around school buildings is pretty near the top of the news agenda at the moment. so it is in this educational district and the one next door alone in the past two weeks, 35 small children and two teach verse been killed. the security building next to the school was car bombed recently, leaving a staff candid about the problems they face here. >>

. as i was raised as a child in new york city from queens new york right here. i never had that problem. i was a child of the 60s and 70s. there was a lot of love and neighbors when you did something bad, your mother and father knew about it before you got home because the neighbors they told on you and they hoped protect you. he said dad, i have a lot of friends. all of my friends they are all colors. boss knee yan. irish you name it. i'm not going to let things that happened in america make me be something that i'm not. he was the type of child that was raised to be everything. we didn't raise him to have a great fear. we never did. >> in florida there seem to be two things that come together. determination. state government carrying these loaded weapons and this stand your ground law. the notion that there comes a moment where you have a right to pull a trigger and it is up to citizens to pull that trigger. it seems that as much as anything else that is where this problem arises and in this case this is a white shooter of a black teen-ager. >> um, that is the case. mr. dunn is white

was so -- lapierre was so disconnected from reality. i worked in new york city public schools. the idea of putting armed guards in schools is not even worth treating as a serious idea. it was so sort of out of step with where i think the conversation has been, the level of respect, and the kind of conversation we've been having nationally that i would almost guarantee you that it has done more actually to help our cause than any one of us could have done. >> no doubt. and to your point, of course, studies have been done, the greater amount of guns are in a particular jurisdiction, the greater likelihood homicide will occur and some gun violence will be sparked off. so it's a pretty ludicrous idea. mark, franklin roosevelt in one of his famous fireside chats said all we have to fear is fear itself. he was speaking about the looming terror of an approaching enemy from the outside, but this seems to be something from the inside. it seems like fear itself is the only thing that wayne lapierre has to offer. let's take a listen to this. >> violent crime is increasing again for the first time
